We drive a 2004 Prius and are in the market for another hybrid vehicle. We've been looking into the Escape hybrid, and we've been encouraging anyone we know to look into hybrids, telling them how much we love ours. We have, however, found dealers to be less than enthusiastic about selling hybrids. Unless you are adament that that is what you want, they try to sell you another car. One guy my husband works with was looking at an Escape hybrid, and the salesman told him he wouldn't get good mileage on the highway, and sold him another car instead! So there is a lot of misinformation out there, many salespeople don't even know anything about the hybrids they are selling. We found this when we bought our Prius. The last time we looked at an Escape hybrid, the salesperson tried to talk us into a regular Escape. So if the numbers of sales do go down, it might be in large part because of the salespeople and dealers, and consumers who are not convinced when they walk in that they want a hybrid.

hello!
Mr. Nye is right, that in the grand scheme of things individuals have little influence over matter. But I CAN vote with my money! We were looking for a car that would allow us to go places and bought our Prius 2005 last May - online. This has turned out to be a wonderful experience: not only do the sales people know what they are doing, but the service department does too!
Driving a Prius has been such a pleasure (energy saving, board computer helps you to drive safer, quiet glide, etc.) I have recommended this vehicle among friends and neighbors - successfully!

Hello,

My guess as to why the dealers are steering people away from Hybrids.... Its simple self enrichment. The costs of the hybrid package are not currently made up for by the premium you pay (i.e. they loose profit margin). I'm guessing Ford puts some of that burden on the dealers by cutting the profit they are given.

So what does a car dealer do to someone that wants a Hybrid? They maximize profit by trying to talk you into a more profitable (for them) non-hybrid Escape.

Its not that they don't understand.... its economics.
